IT WAS a great night for York College field hockey.

The team made history on Wednesday night, earning a 4-2 NCAA tournament win over DeSales University in the opening round of the tournament. This was the first-ever NCAA Tournament game for both teams.

The Spartans starred quickly as Katie Martino scored in the third minute of play, and then after DeSales scored to tie the game, went back in front for good in the second quarter on goals by Maggie Spadafora and Connie Harburda.

Harburda scored the clincher with 8:02 left in the game after a shot by Martino was stopped.

The Spartans (16-5) visit Salisbury, Maryland for a 10 a.m. game Saturday against the top-seeded Salisbury Sea Gulls in the second round of the tournament.
